With a number of LA based producers currently giving a nod to the London bass scene it’s interesting to see more creative links emerging between two such different cities. Although these links have been apparent musically for a minute now LA streetwear brand DTA (short for Don’t Trust Anyone) created by the founders of prolific brand Rogue Status , have also been setting their sites this side of the Atlantic recently launching a London wing to their campaign, DTA LDN . Through the help of key links in the capital, a seemingly endless supply of stickers aka ’slapsys’ and an army of individuals in the London music scene representing their brand, DTA seem to be hard to ignore right now. We sent our friend Sam Whiteside to catch up with one of DTA’s head honchos Jasper Watts in LA to get the low down…
Tell us about Rogue Status/ DTA. Where have you guys come from?
We are from all over the place. Yo and Rex started the company 5 years ago, I got involved shortly afterwards. Now there are 8 of us that work out of Venice, Los Angeles . Yo grew up in Ottawa, Canada, Rex in Atlanta, myself in North London. Matt our production manager and Brian, general manager are both from LA, same as Juan and Chris. Recently Dominic and West joined the Team, Dom is also from North London, we were neighbors actually. West grew up in Hawaii. Quite an international group!
The UK was one of the first places outside of the States where we had accounts, in the last 3 years most of those stores have gone out of business. But none of us see that as deterrent, if you get it right and know what you’re doing then you can quite easily establish yourself in London. And obviously it helps with me having come from there. It’s exciting to really focus on building our brand in the UK.
How are Rogue Status/DTA different?
DTA is Rogue’s angry little brother on steroids.
You are primarily a street wear brand but you are involved in a lot of different things, tell us about them all.
Motorsports, Action Sports, Music, Fashion, Charity..... We never set out with any particular goals though, I think that is the key to how we got where we are. We let things naturally materialize and never forced anything that didn’t feel right.
I’ve been a fan of grime for years, my good friend Will Robson-Scott shot the 2009 Grime Calendar that’s how I was able to meet up with DJ Magic who knows pretty much everyone in the Grime scene. Had an opportunity to shoot Ghetto and Griminal on New Year Eve 2009 on the roof this warehouse, I put the video up on Channel Zero which is the video section of our media website Thesmogcheck.com, it got such a good response back in the states it made sense to keep putting more video’s out. We are working on a mixtape mixed by DJ Magic to be released this April, we’ve got a release party in London with Dirty Canvas and ATG on April 29th. We are also about to work with 12thPlanet out here in LA so keep an eye out.
We have an event planned in LA this Summer in Collaboration with ATG showcasing all their artists and some other huge Dubstep and Grime Artists form the UK. Streetwear has been a part of London culture for years, but I think recently it has taken more of its own style which I love. If I can somehow join the cities up then great, it seems to be doing a good job of it by itself right now, especially musically. But hopefully our event will push that too and we’ll keep doing more in the future. We just launched our new London based website, check it out DTALDN.com .
Do you see a lot of similarities in the two cities?
Not really that’s why I like LA, if I wanted to live somewhere similar to London I would have moved to NY! London has its own thing clearly and sets the pace in a lot of respects, I just wanna find a little niche that can appeal to both scenes.
The best music is still coming out of London as far as I’m concerned, it’s such a fast moving scene it seems to take a while for it to catch up out here. The music part of our site really shows what we’re into.
How would you like DTA to develop over the next year?
We are working on stepping up our cut & sew program, it takes so long to get dialed and keep it profitable. Our goal is to find the medium between affordability and quality.

THE DETOUR

WE LET THE REST OF THE DTA POSSE HEAD ON TO TORONTO, AT THE TIME WE THOUGHT THE CAR WAS DONE, IT FELT LIKE THE DRIVE SHAFT WAS GOING TO BREAK IN HALF THE WAY IT WAS BANGING INTO THE TRANSMISSION. LUCKILY FOR US THERE WAS A TOYOTO DEALERSHIP 5 MILES FROM WHERE WE HAD BROKEN DOWN, SO WE HIT THE HARD SHOULDER AND CRAWLED TOWARD THE GARAGE. AFTER A QUICK IN SPECTION WE REALIZED THAT THE BOLTS ON THE DRIVE SHAFT HAD COME LOOSE AND A COUPLE MISSING FROM THE VIBRATIONS OF SUCH A LONG DRIVE, AND LOTS OS BURNOUTS!
WE GOT THE LOOSE BOLTS TIGHTENED UP, THEY DIDN'T HAVE THAT SPEC OF BOLT ON HAND SO WE HAD TO WAIT TILL MORNING TO GRAB SOME NEW ONES, SO WE HEADED INTO OTTAWA FOR A COUPLE OF BEERS WITH THE TRIPLE BOGEY GUYS.
GOT BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP AT 8AM, THE DRIVE SHAFT HAD TO COME OFF THE GET THE BOLTS ON (WHICH WE STILL DIDN'T HAVE)
4 HOURS LATER WE HAD THE CAR BACK IN 1 PIECE, THE GUYS AT TONY GRAHAM TOYOTA SAVED THE DAY, WITHOUT THEM OUR GUMBALL WOULD HAVE FINISHED 2 DAYS EARLY, THANKS AGAIN.
MR GRAHAM HIMSELF HEARD WHAT WAS GOING ON AND CAME OUT TO SEE THE CAR.
SO WE SHOWED HIM THE CAR.. THANKS TO EVERYONE AT TONY GRAHAM.
OFF WE HEADED TO CATCH UP WITH THE BOYS WHO WHERE HEADING TO NYC FROM TORONTO.. BACK IN THE GAME.
